Putting psychologist out of work February 21, 2008

Sometimes I ask people if they like their job and they usually reply “it’s a job.” as though that explains it all. People come home from an eight (+) day and kick off their high heels, grab that microwaveable pizza and begin to bitch and moan to whoever may listen. “It’s a job.”

Me, I’m sort of the glass half full kind of girl. At Miami where business suits parade the streets, I find comfort in the comfortable chairs of Bachelor Hall’s journalism rooms. I constantly have the argument with a friend when he snaps back at me “at least I’m going to make money,” I reply “at least I’m going to be doing something I enjoy.” We all get it that the written word, especially with the idea reinforced in Ims201, is some what dying.

Well the best of all these worlds–journalism jobs & bitching and moaning has come together here. A website where journalist can vent about their job. Ironically enough they post anonymously (lord knows your name carries your reputation in journalism) their complaints. This blog highlights one of the big arguments that many of the visitors to the website seemed to disagree with. A guy who commented that maybe instead of complaining we should take productive steps to help newspapers from dying out. I agree with him and find the other comments interesting with what people had to say back. The only thing I could think when reading was hey, it’s a job.

I totally agree and laugh at the idea of journalists sitting in the cubicles and venting through a website about the decline of our industry. I get it and like all journalism majors at Miami, if you don’t get it, it’s beaten into you. Your career will be hard, long, and not very profitable. Maybe it’s because I’m not in “the real world” yet or maybe it’s just the kind of people journalists tend to be but I think there will forever be a romanced “because I love it” speech that follows any lecture on our dying industry. And that’s one of the things I like about our major. That, and the speech will always be impeccably written. Business majors certainly can’t say that.
